About The Cosmetology and Barbering Program
Students will be equipped with fundamentals, and develop the professional skills needed to work in the cosmetology industry with confidence. Students get the chance to work with real clients at our guest services clinic to put their skills to the test. Graduates will walk away with a wide range of skills in hair, skin, and nail care that will prepare them to join or start a salon. The focus on fundamentals has equipped students to pass the California State Cosmetology Board Exam and go on to build successful careers in cosmetology and barbering.
The Cosmetology and Barbering Program is a comprehensive program that is based on the requirements set forth by the State of California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology and meets all educational requirements (instruction and required operations) for becoming a licensed cosmetologist and/or a barber in the State of California. The total length of the program is 1200 hours. Upon successful completion, future professionals will earn a certification in Cosmetology and Barbering and will be eligible to pursue licensure with the State of California.
Please note: Students must qualify, apply for, and pass the cosmetology and barbering licensure exams separately.
Upon successful completion of the Cosmetology and Barbering program at Campus, formerly known as MTI College, students will be able to do the following:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the laws and rules regulating the cosmetology industry in the State of California.
- Discuss and apply the scientific aspects of cosmetology, including anatomy and physiology, chemistry and bacteriology to their professional activities.
- Follow general sanitation procedures and safety guidelines as applied to all aspects of hair, skin and nail care.
- Consistently apply appropriate Paul Mitchell systems techniques in the following areas:
- Haircutting and styling
- Hair coloring, permanent waving, chemical relaxing, and other scalp and hair treatments;
- Skincare treatments, esthetics, and the application of cosmetics
- Manicures, pedicures, nail enhancements, and advanced nail techniques.
- Hair cutting and styling following the Paul Mitchell Barbering system.
- Skin care treatments for men.
- Beard Design, shaving with straight edge razors and maintenance.
- Demonstrate and understanding of the skills needed for building and retaining clientele.
- Demonstrate an understanding of California state requirements and procedures for licensed Cosmetologists/Barbers.
- Describe and adhere to the laws and rules regulating the cosmetology and barbering industry in the State of California.
- Discuss and apply the scientific aspects of cosmetology and barbering, including anatomy and physiology, chemistry and bacteriology to their professional activities.
- Follow general sanitation procedures and safety guidelines as applied to all aspects of hair, skin and nail care.
- Perform salon services in a friendly, competent, and professional manner.
- Make appropriate product recommendations and properly advise customers on the product’s use and safety.
- Apply fundamental business practices to a salon environment, including customer service, retail skills, and client recordkeeping.
Paul Mitchell the School at Campus also offers education from the Business Fundamentals curriculum developed by PMAE.

Cosmetology and Barbering Program
In addition to completing the Cosmetology and Barbering School by Paul Mitchell at Campus, in Sacramento, eligible students have the opportunity to add a barbering component, preparing them for licensure as a cosmetologist and barber.
The barbering curriculum can be taken as part of the Cosmetology and Barbering Program or as a standalone course for PM Graduates only. The multilevel curriculum will hone the student’s technical and business skills while developing their creativity. With upscale salons and barbershops focusing on professional men’s grooming, skilled barbers are in high demand to meet the needs of this growing clientele.

California License Examination Pass Rates
A written examination is required to become a licensed cosmetologist or barber in the state of California.

Cosmetology Licensure Pass Rate: 89.80%
Barbering Licensure Pass Rate: 90.91%
